The renegade Thai general Khattiya Sawatdiphol, who broke ranks and backed the Red Shirt protesters, has died in hospital in Bangkok at the age of 58.

Major General Khattiya, also known by his nom de guerre Seh Daeng, worked as a security adviser for the opposition movement.

He was shot in the head last Thursday as he briefed foreign journalists nearby to the Red Shirt camp in Bangkok’s commercial district.

Khattiya was suspended by the Thai army in January for disobeying orders and over his links with the Red Shirt activists.
