Terrorist plot uncovered in Indonesia

Indonesian police say they have foiled a plot to assassinate the country’s president and carry out attacks on hotels to kill foreigners.

Interrogations of suspects arrested after raids in the western province of Aceh are said to have led to the uncovering of the plot.

Police say a militant training camp had been found.

Police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said: “They planned to carry out assassinations of US citizens or foreigners in Jakarta and Java and mentioned attacks on the president and state officials. They planned to attack hotels and imitate attacks carried out in Mumbai.”

Police say the attacks were planned to be carried out on Independence Day in August, with the aim of declaring an Islamic state.

They say the Aceh training camp was run by a splinter group of the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.
