Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Washington for a four-day visit to his government’s leading backer, and the supplier of national security.

The US is preparing to wind down its military operation in Afghanistan, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was keen to underline America’s commitment would continue;

“As we look forward to a responsible orderly transition in the international combat mission in Afghanistan, we will not abandon the Afghan people. Our civilian commitment will remain long into the future.”

Despite disagreements, the relationship remains strong agreed Karzai;

“As two mature nations and two mature governments by now the Afghan government is mature too. We’ll be disagreeing from time to time, but this is the sign of a mature relationship and the sign of a steady relationship.”

Karzai meets President Barack Obama tomorrow.
