A Pablo Picasso painting has set a new world record for a piece of art sold at auction. ‘Nude, Green leaves and Bust’, said to be a depiction of the Spanish impressionist’s mistress, sold in New York for more than 80 million euros after an unnamed bid via telephone. The price for the 1932 work, which includes Christies commission, is being seen as a sign of growing confidence in a recovering art market.
The picture, ‘La Treille, by French artist George Braque also sold for more than seven and half million euros, twice its estimated value. But, a work by Henri Matisse sold for much less than expected, only a mere 11.5 million euros. The new record, by the Picasso breaks the previous one, set by a Giacometti bronze statue.
