With so many people in the streets and so much anger at the Greek government’s austerity measures something had to give.
In Athens groups broke away from the main demonstration and attempted to gain access to the square in front of parliament. They were pushed back by police using tear gas.
A building in central Athens has also been set on fore by protesters throwing petrol bombs. There are reports of people being trapped inside.
There are also reports of clashes in Salonika. The latest opinion polls show a majority opposes the spending cuts and higher taxes the government will impose later this year to stave off bankruptcy.
