British Petroleum has continued to take a financial hammering as it struggles to stem the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico following the destruction of its drilling rig there.
BP says its efforts to avert an even greater environmental disaster are costing 4.5 million euros a day.
The spill after the rig blew up and sank is fuelling opposition to White House plans for more offshore drilling around the US.
With a massive oil slick heading towards the coast BP has said it will give 25 million dollars to each of the four states effected – Louisiana, Mississipi, Alabama and Florida.
Shares in the London-based oil major continued to tumble, 25 billion euros has been wiped off the value of BP since the rig caught fire.
The spill has led the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to reverse his decision to push for more drilling off the coast of his state.
Schwarzenegger said: “ Why would we want to take that kind of risk.”
