Police investigating the failed attempt to detonate a car bomb in New York are looking for a white man seen in this security video. It was filmed about half a block from where the vehicle was abandoned on Saturday evening. Police say he was behaving furtively as he changed his shirt, looking back in the direction of the car.
They are treating sceptically a claim by the Pakistani Taliban via the internet that it was behind the attempted attack. Its leader, who was reported killed in January, has appeared threatening attacks on US cities.
“Although a Taliban bomb maker has claimed on the Internet that the car bomb was placed in Times Square to avenge mujahadeen fighters, we have no evidence to support this claim. Another claim of responsibility emailed to a local news organization is being investigated,” said Commissioner Raymond Kelly of the New York Police Department.
The Commissioner said the bomb was crude but could have caused a significant fireball.
Investigators have been analysing evidence from the Nissan in which the device was found.
