The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for failed car bomb plot that forced the evacuation of New York’s Times Square. They said the attempted attack was to avenge the killing of two Islamists, referring to them as ‘Muslin Martyrs.’
The vehicle in which the device was found has been taken away. It had been parked in the city’s the bustling theatre district, during the peak early evening period.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: ‘‘Let me say that we are very lucky, thanks to alert New Yorkers and professional police officers we avoided what could have been a very deadly event.’‘
Police defused the device using a guided robot. Described as ‘amateurish’ it included propane tanks, fireworks, petrol and a timer.
Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama have praised the rapid police response. The alarm was raised after a T-shirt vendor saw smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder.
The claims by the Pakistani Taliban were reportedly issued on an Islamist website.
