Violence erupts as Ukraine votes on Russian fleet

Russia’s leasing of a naval base in Ukraine has always been a controversial subject but it’s rarely been such a source of violent confrontation in parliament

But chaos erupted in the chamber on Tuesday when lawmakers voted on the issue.

Fighting broke out as opposition MPs tried to unfurl Ukrainian flags.

Some let off smoke bombs while others threw eggs at the speaker.

Nevertheless, parliament agreed to extense the lease extension with ten more votes than needed – guaranteeing the Russian navy a place to stay until 2042.

At the same time, thousands of people took to the streets outside in protest.

Opponents say that by hosting the Black Sea fleet Ukraine could be dragged into future conflicts Moscow has with other powers.
