Air travel across Europe is nearly back to normal following the massive disruptions caused by the volcanic explosioin in Iceland. Air traffic agency Eurocontrol expects almost all flights to take off. But there are still thousands of passengers stranded and now come the questions about who will reimburse them for extra costs.
One British traveller said: “Well, you pay a lot for the flights and I hope the company are taking care of their customers.”
Whilst another Spanish man was angry at low-cost carrier, Ryanair: “I think it’s savage. This is a joke. You fly with Ryanair because it’s cheap, then you have to spend four or five hundred euros to stay here or get back home. It’s a joke!”
The anger at Ryanair comes after the company previously said it would only pay for the cost of the ticket. The policy has now been changed to meet EU regulations.
Ryanair Chief Executive, Michael O’Leary, said: “We’ve never refused to pay, we just said yesterday we would propose to limit the payments to the ticket price paid. We will reimburse reasonable receipted expenses from disrupted passengers if they send them to us, but we will not be paying compensation because the EU261 says no compensation arises if the cancellations are not the fault of the airlines.”
The airlines themselves are seeking over a billion euros in compensation from European governments.
