Belgian PM tenders resignation to king

Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has gone to King Albert to tender his government’s resignation, after an emergency cabinet meeting.

Leterme is being quoted as saying he had had no other choice but to quit after the Flemish liberal party withdrew its support for the ruling five-party coalition.

Without the backing of the Open VLD the government still has 76 of the 150 seats in the lower house of parliament but it would be hard to govern with such a slim majority.

The Flemish liberals say they have lost confidence in Yves Leterme’s fledgling, five-month-old government because of its handling of a dispute between French and Dutch speaking parties over electoral boundaries around Brussels.
