Pope Benedict XVI has said the Roman Catholic Church has been “wounded by its sins” as he arrived in Malta for his first foreign trip of 2010.
The comments made to journalists aboard the papal flight from Rome was the pontiff’s only mention of the recent sex allegations currently engulfing the Vatican.
A seperate scandal erupted in Malta earlier this week. Ten men have alleged they were sexually molested as children by priests at an orphanage on the deeply Catholic island nation during the 1980s and 1990s.
They have called for a meeting with the Pope but there is as yet no confirmation as to whether their request will be granted.
Benedict was in Malta mark the 1,950th anniversary of St. Paul’s shipwreck. He is due to return to Rome on Sunday.
