In the latest blow to the reputation of the world’s biggest car manufacturer… Toyota has had to withdraw a new SUV Lexus model in the US because of fears it may overturn while taking corners.

Toyota halted sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after the not-for-profit Consumer Reports magazine urged shoppers not to buy the sports utility vehicle, branding it a “safety risk”.

Toyota, which also sells the Lexus GX in the Middle East, Australia and the Pacific region and Russia, says no decision has been made on whether sales will be suspended in those markets as well.

The luxury SUV is a low-volume model for Toyota. The potential problem with its stability control adds to the safety crisis that has cost Toyota billions of euros in lost sales and forced it to cut prices.
