An earthquake measuring 7.1 has struck a mountainous region of southwestern China, killing at least 300 people and trapping many others in rubble.

A series of aftershocks have caused further problems as low brick buildings collapsed. Troops have been despatched to the area to help in the rescue operation.

It is feared that many people could be without shelter in freezing temperatures in the high mountain villages.
