At least 400 people have been killed and as many as 8,000 others are reported to have been injured in an earthquake said to be magnitude 7.1 which has struck a mountainous region of southwestern China.
A series of aftershocks have caused many of the low brick buildings in Qinghai province to collapse.
Troops have been despatched to the area to help rescue those buried in debris in high mountain villages there.
