German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed sadness at the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski. The president was among the passengers killed when their plane crashed on its approach to a Russian airport on Saturday.
“It’s a political and human tragedy for Poland, our neighbour,” said Merkel. “Lech Kaczynski has been a real representative for the interests of his country, he loved his country and he fought for Europe. I knew that he dedicated his whole life to Poland’s and Europe’s freedom.”
Czech President Vaclav Klaus also expressed shock at the death of the Polish President.
He said: “This is a horrible and enormous loss. The tragic death of the Polish President Lech Kaczinski, his wife and another 95 people is a horrible event that has shattered and shocked me, and hit me personally.”
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown also paid tribute to Kaczynski as he spoke at an election campaign event in Scotland.
