Rival claims over who rules Kyrgyzstan


Confusion and lawlessness are rife but Kyrgyzstan’s self-proclaimed new leadership is adamant that it is in full control.

Opposition leader Roza Otunbayeva says her interim administration will rule until elections are held in six months time.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled the capital amid the violent protests. His home has been among the targets of looters. Said to be holed up in the south of the Central Asian country, he insists he has no plans to step down.

Extra Russian paratroopers have been sent to the country’s Kant air base in Kyrgyzstan. A US base there supports military operations in nearby Afghanistan.
