Turkish and French leaders discuss their differences

The Turkish prime minister and the French president have had the chance to discuss their differences of opinion during official talks in Paris.

Among the bones of contention between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Nicolas Sarkozy are Turkey’s EU aspirations and Iran.

Erdogan said on Monday that Turkey wanted to share Europe’s burden rather than add to it but Sarkozy has repeatedly voiced his opposition to Turkish entry to the bloc.

On Iran, France is pushing for sanctions over its nuclear programme while Turkey favours diplomacy.

The official visit draws to a close a nine-month festival celebrating Turkish culture in Paris and in a sign of a warmer future for their frosty ties, Sarkozy today said he will make his first presidential visit to Turkey towards the end of this year.
