Thailand’s Prime Minister has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok after nearly a month of protests. Speaking on television, Abhisit Vejjajiva said the move would help the authorities arrest leaders of the “red-shirt” protest movement.
Earlier thousands of demonstrators marched on parliament forcing a session to be abandoned. Recent days have also seen a siege of the city’s main shopping district.
The protestors want elections they hope will see former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra return to office.
