Thousands of Catholic pilgrims gathered in the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square for the traditional Good Friday celebration known as the Way of the Cross.
Pope Benedict XVI made no mention of the sex abuse scandals engulfing the church, instead reflecting on the ceremony’s key themes of betrayal and forgiveness, friendship and love.
The event marks the day Jesus Christ was crucified and features a step-by-step re-enactment of his walk bearing the cross.
The ritual is believed to have started during the Crusades when knights and pilgrims began to follow the same route Christ took to his
crucifixion site.
