Germany’s former Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, has been celebrating his 80th birthday.
He appeared briefly in front of his home in Ludwigshafen as thousands of well-wishers and world leaders sent messages of congratulations.
But Kohl, who is still suffering from a serious head injury in 2008, told a German newspaper that he was disappointed his Christian Democrat Union party turned its back on him during a funding scandal a decade ago.
The CDU has postponed an official celebration until early next month because of Kohl’s ailing health.
