US-Russian crew blasts off to space station


A half-a-year odyssey in orbit has begun for a NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts. They have blasted off, bound for the ISS, on board a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The launch took place, on schedule, from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Russia will ferry all crews to the International Space Station aboard its Soyuz spaceships after US space agency NASA mothballs its shuttle fleet by the end of this year.
