Pilgrims celebrate Good Friday in Jerusalem

Pilgrims have been retracing the path that Jesus is believed to have walked ahead of his crucifixion.

Hundreds of people are taking part in Good Friday commemorations in Jerusalem, where Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified, buried and then resurrected.

This is known as the Way of the Cross but also Stations of the Cross, with 12 stopping points along the way.

At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre pilgrims waited for the unlocking of the doors ahead of Easter rituals.

While Catholics and Orthodox Christians follow different calendars, this year they coincide and the churches are celebrating Good Friday together.

The Jewish holiday of Passover is also being marked in Jerusalem’s Old City.
