Israeli warplanes strike targets in Gaza Strip

Israeli warplanes have struck multiple targets in the Gaza Strip. The warplanes were sent in – says the Israeli military – in retaliation for a rocket attack on southern Israel.

There are no reports of any serious injuries although several children have been treated after being hit by flying debris.

Hamas officials deny the targets were weapons making factories as claimed by the Israelis. Instead they say, a cheese factory was destroyed along with a film production complex and two open-air areas used for training by Hamas military personnel.

Last week two Israeli soldiers and a Palestinian civilian were killed in a firefight which led to an incursion by Israeli tanks backed by attack helicopters.

It was the fiercest fighting seen since Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip last year.

Hamas leaders have confirmed their fighters took part in the engagement which analysts say marks a tactical change by the militant group.
