Artist's protest against child abuse

An artist posing as Jesus on the cross has caused a stir outside Vienna’s main cathedral where he staged a one-man protest against child abuse in the Catholic Church.

Spectators applauded Emmerich Weissenberger’s performance, hanging from scaffolding 20 metres above the ground, over the main entrance to Saint Stephen’s.

Meanwhile, the head of the Catholic church in Germany, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, has admitted mistakes were made by failing to help victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy and said he hoped Good Friday could be “a new start for the Church that is so urgently needed.”

The Roman Catholic Church in Germany has opened a hotline for abuse victims, following the lead of Ireland, Austria and the Netherlands.

While in France, magistrates in Normandy are investigating two priests, one on suspicion of sexual abuse of a minor in the early ’90s and another for alleged possession of child pornography.

Both men have been suspended pending further inquiries.
