Pope Benedict XVI marked Good Friday – the Christian world’s most solemn day – under a cloud cast by a series of peadophile priest scandals.

The Vatican has declared a “moment of suffering” for the church.

But many victims of predatory priests have endured a lifetime of suffering.

It was in this charged atmosphere the pontiff set about the Holy Day’s observances.

And as the Way of the Cross walk got underway with the faithful re-enacting Jesus Christ’s final hours and crucifixion, the Vatican lamented the child sex abuse scandals which may forever taint the Catholic Church.
