Britain emerged from recession at the end of last year with more vigour than the experts had predicted.
UK PLC grew by 0.4 per cent in the last three months of 2009 against the forecast of 0.3 per cent.
Separate figures showed the current account deficit narrowed sharply, which led to a strengthening in sterling.
The figures will provide some cheer for the Labour government, which is facing potential defeat in the upcoming general election.
