In Italy Silvio Berlusconi has cast his vote in the second round of the country’s regional elections. He and his candidates have been assessing the first votes. About 20 per cent of the votes have been counted across the 13 regions. The candidates in his centre-right party have defied predictions, with the party making two gains.
The regions of Lombardy and Veneto remain in the hands of the centre right. There were two gains for the party in the Campania and Calabria region. At the moment the regions of Piedmont and Lazio are split between the centre-right and the centre-left.
The turnout was lower than expected at up to 65 per cent, almost 10 percent down on the last regional elections. The results are a clear boost for Silvio Berlusconi’s party. The full results of the polls are expected by Tuesday morning.
