Obama makes surprise visit to Afghanistan

Barack Obama has made a surprise visit to Kabul, his first trip to Afghanistan since becoming US President.

He is expected to meet the Afghan President Hamid Karzai, as well as US officials.

He is also due to make an address to US soldiers.

The White House says Obama wanted to get what they call an “on the ground update” about the US-led war.

In December Obama ordered the deployment of an extra 30,000 American troops to Afghanistan and set a target of mid-2011 to begin a withdrawal.
