Israeli media today confirmed that the Israeli diplomat being expelled from Britain for his role in the false passports affair is an agent for Mossad, Israel’s Secret Service.

Israel will be allowed to replace him, says a leading newspaper and army radio, as ties between the countries have not been seriously damaged.

British Foreign Minister David Miliband was angered that 12 British passports had been cloned and used in the Dubai assassination of a leading Hamas commander. He has sought assurances from Israel that it would not happen again, although in a similar case in the 1990s Israel promised it would not repeat the action.

Israel has neither confirmed not denied killing Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, who Hamas buried in the Gaza Strip with full paramilitary honours.
