Sarkozy slams ETA at slain policeman's funeral

There were solemn scenes near Paris this morning as the French and Spanish leaders paid tribute to a policeman whose murder has been blamed on ETA.

The cold-blooded killing in a suburb near the French capital sent shockwaves through the country.

Today, at a state memorial service for the slain officer, Nicolas Sarkozy repeated his pledge to pursue the armed Basque separatists without mercy.

Addressing Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the French President said: “We are fully mobilised. We are going to eradicate all ETA bases in France, one by one. We are going to flush them out one by one and we will dismantle all support for this terrorist organisation.”

Officer Jean-Serge Nerin, 52, was shot dead after his patrol intercepted a vehicle speeding away from the scene of a car theft.

A Spanish man, a suspected member of ETA, has been arrested. Police are still hunting several other people in connection with the murder.
