Clashes amid rising Mideast tension

Tension remains high in the West Bank, as Israel comes under growing international pressure over settlement building.

Fresh clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians have broken out in Hebron.

This on the day the US, the EU, the UN and Russia – the Mideast “Quartet” of peace mediators – slammed Israel over its announcement to expand its settlement programme.

Diplomats say the move could hamper their efforts to get Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiating table.

Demonstrations have been erupting throughout the West Bank.

As well as anger over the settlement expansion, the protesters are against plans to add holy sites in the West Bank to an Israeli heritage list.

Also, in the Gaza Strip, hundreds of people waving Hamas flags have protested in Rafah.

Part of their demonstration is over Israeli restrictions on entry into the compound that houses the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
