The French president Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed that the Basque separatists ETA will be pursued without mercy following the murder of a French policeman.
52 year old Jean-Serge Nerin was shot dead after a robbery south east of Paris on Tuesday night.
The President visited the police station where the officer was based, and spoke after meeting his family and colleagues.
“ETA must understand that the mobilisation of police and gendarmerie forces of the French Republic against this terrorist organisation will be total and merciless,” he said.
The Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero and the country’s interior minister are to attend the officer’s funeral next Tuesday.
ETA is thought to have been increasingly active on French soil and there’ve been several confrontations with the security forces – but this is the first time a French policeman has been killed by the Basque separatists.
One person is in custody and several other suspects are still being sought by the authorities following the shooting.
