A rocket fired from inside the Gaza Strip into Israel has struck a kibbutz and killed a foreign farm worker.
It happened during a high-profile visit to the enclave by the EU’s foreign policy chief.
The victim, a man in his thirties, is reported to be from Thailand. It is the first death by rocket fire in southern Israel since last year’s Israeli campaign in Gaza.
Baroness Catherine Ashton’s arrival is one of the highest-level visits by a Western politician since Hamas took power. She said she wanted to see the impact of the one billion euros the Palestinians receive annually in aid from the EU.
Earlier, Baroness Ashton met Israeli President Shimon Peres. She had already criticised Israeli plans to build new settler homes in East Jerusalem, saying the move endangered efforts to revive peace talks.
The US and Israel have been trying to bridge divisions over the issue. President Obama referred to a disagreement in a TV interview, but has rejected claims that relations were in meltdown.
