The US special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell meets Palestinian has postponed his planned visit to the region.
As clashes rage in Jerusalem, Mitchell delayed his visit to the region amid a deepening rift with the Israeli government.
He had been due to meet the Israeli president Shimon Peres – no new date for the visit has been given.
The row over Israel’s decision to build 1600 new Jewish homes in occupied East Jerusalem is being seen as the lowest point in US Israeli relations in 35 years.
The White House has demanded a
halt to the construction but Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman reportedly said that was unreasonable.
