Egypt: Mubarak appears well after operation

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has appeared on state television after undergoing an operation in Germany.

Mubarak had gall bladder surgery and a growth removed from his intestine on March 6 at the Heidelberg University Hospital.

The president’s health is normally a taboo subject in a country where media censorship is rife.

Many Egyptians believe that the president’s 46-year-old son, Jamal, is being groomed to take over, although both Mubaraks deny any such deal.

Hosni Mubarak has ruled Egypt since 1981 but critics say previous elections have been rigged.

Former UN nuclear chief Mohammed El Baradei is considering a run for the presidency in the next poll, set to be held in 2011.
