Taliban attack may prompt NATO action

A series of bomb attacks in the Afghan city of Kandahar in which at least 30 people died may prompt NATO to turn its attention on the southern Afghan city.

The main target was the main prison, but a police headquarters was also bombed.

Its thought the prison attack was an attempt to repeat a jailbreak in 2008, in which 400 Taiban fighters were freed.

The Taliban say they carried out the bombings as a “message” to NATO.

Now, the US has hinted that Kandahar – the spiritual home of the Taliban – could be the next major target for NATO after Helmand.

The dead were taken to Kandahar’s main hospital, along with more than 50 wounded.

Police officers, along with guests at a nearby wedding celebration, are believed to be among the victims.
