The first American consumer lawsuit has been filed against Toyota. Southern California has brought legal action against the car-maker, claiming it engaged in fraud by hiding evidence of dangerous defects in its vehicles.
The Orange County District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas, says that Toyota endangered the public: “Toyota knowingly sold cars and trucks with defects that caused Toyotas to accelerate suddenly and uncontrollably. These defects exist in hundreds of thousands of Toyotas sold to Californians over the last several years. Toyota has known about these defects, but intentionally did not disclose them to California purchasers.”
Toyota has recalled more than eight million vehicles all over the world due to problems with the accelerator pedal. In some models, the pedal became stuck because of a loose floor mat or a fault in the assembling process.
There have been five crash deaths in the US since 2007 linked to Toyotas and Lexuses accelerating without the driver intending them to.
