Israel closes West Bank amid security fears

Israel has sealed off the West Bank for 48 hours until midnight on Saturday because of fears over security, according to the army. It is the first time in more than a year that such a move has been implemented when no Jewish festival is taking place.

Security has been stepped up in east Jerusalem, where tension has risen following the visit by US Vice-President Joe Biden. US and Palestinian officials criticised Israel’s plans to build more Jewish homes in an Arab part of the city.

Overnight the Israeli air force launched two raids on targets in the Gaza strip. One of the strikes hit a mechanical workshop in the town of Khan Younis.

Witnesses say several Palestinians were injured in the raids, which came in response to a rocket attack on Israeli territory. There were no victims but Israel says a kibbutz was damaged.
