The richest man in the world is the Mexican telecom giant, Carlos Slim. That is according to Forbes magazine which has just released its annual list of very, very rich people.
It is the first time since 1994 that an American has not led the ratings and it means he hs knocked Microsoft founder Bill Gates into second place.
The listings are not just for the curious, Steve Forbes who is the magazine’s Editor-in-chief said they are a snap shot of where money is being made and where it is being lost: “Carlos Slim is ahead by about 500 million, which in that atmosphere is pretty close, about 53 and a half billion to 53 billion. But if Bill Gates was truly interested in just being number one, he would not have given away so much money.”
The world’s youngest billionaire is 25-year old Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of four billion dollars.
But the interesting aspect of all this is that despite a world recession 97 new billionaires have been added to the ratings, 62 of them from Asia.
