60 die in Indian temple stampede

Indian police say at least 60 people have died in a stampede after the gate of a Hindu temple collapsed in Uttar Pradesh.

Devotees had gathered for a rutual feast and free distribution of clothes at a popular Ram Janaki temple owned by a Hindu holy man when the gate, which was under construction, collapsed.

Many of the injured have been taken to hospitals in the state capital, Lucknow, for treatment. There is no indication yet as to why the gate collapsed.
