Amateur video footage of the earthquake’s impact on a disco in Santiago and that of the tsunami on the Chilean town of Constitucion has emerged conveying the destructive power of nature’s forces.
President Michelle Bachelet has visited some of the injured who were being cared for in a hastily constructed field hospital.
Her calls for calm seem to have been heeded as there have been no reports of major outbreaks of looting. This may have had more to do with troops finally arriving with aid in at least some of the more isolated costal towns, although several residents complained it was too little too late.
Tsunami hit Constitucion accounts for nearly half of the official death toll which has risen to nearly 800.
But many Chileans believe that scores of deaths could have been avoided if the government had responded faster to the earthquake which set off the roaring tsunami a few hours later.
