European integration is a priority for Ukraine, according to its new president. To that end, Victor Yanukovich and the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have set a target of a year to establish a deal for bilateral ties.
The two men have been meeting in Brussels – Yanukovich’s first foreign trip since being sworn in as the new head of state last Thursday. He is due to visit Moscow on Friday.
After the talks he also guaranteed the delivery of Russian gas supplies which pass through Ukraine.
Yanukovich is expected to seek progress towards visa-free travel for Ukrainians in the EU but big breakthroughs are unlikely in any of his scheduled meetings with the EU president and the bloc’s foreign policy chief.
