The military chief of the Basque separatist group ETA has been arrested, according to Spain.

In a statement, the Spanish Interior Ministry said that Ibon Gogeascoechea had been detained in
Normandy, in northwest France, this morning. It said he is wanted over a plot to attack the
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

He has been on the run since 1997.

Two other people, alleged to be senior rebels, were also taken in for questioning in connection with two separate assassinations in 2008 – that of a former Socialist MP and a Basque businessman.
