Turkish arrests spark plea for more transparency

As Turkey reels from the fallout of an alleged plot to unseat the government, politicians and military men have dominated the headlines.

But what do ordinary Turks think about the showdown between the country’s Islamist-rooted government and secular armed forces?

It is a showdown that has seen dozens of officers detained.

Some Turks simply want to know more about what is going on.

“We follow these raids anxiously,” said Ankara resident Nurettin Ulgec. “Since they don’t inform citizens, everybody is wondering what will happen in the end and we are all concerned.”

“I believe that such investigations, pre-investigations and probes should be carried out more openly,” added fellow Ankara dweller Halil Koc. “They should inform the public more.”

On Friday, two retired generals became the most senior military figures so far to be charged over the alleged plot. The former head of Turkey’s First Army and an ex-special forces commander were both remanded in custody ahead of their trial.
