The head of Japanese carmaker Toyota has been facing tough questions from a US congressional panel about accidents involving at least five deaths in the states.

Akio Toyoda was summoned to appear as his company conceded it had let safety standards slip and still cannot explain most incidents of unintended acceleration in its cars.

The tone was set for the questioning when the the chairman of the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee opened proceedings by criticising Toyota for either ignoring or minimising reports of sudden acceleration.

Earlier Toyoda said “Safety is our top priority and I intend to cooperate fully with the US government.”
