Madeira to receive 50 million euros in aid

Portugal’s government has announced 50 million euros in aid to help rebuild businesses in Madeira, destroyed in floods and landslides over the weekend.

As the Portuguese President prepares to make another visit to the island, rescuers work on to find survivors, often with tragic results.

The bodies of a couple were unearthed on Tuesday night. A torrent of water had forced their car into a ravine.

The island has begun burying its dead. Local authorities say the bodies of 39 victims have been recovered so far. Eighteen people are still missing.

And the clean-up effort continues. The government hopes to sweep away the mud and debris as soon as possible, so as to minimise damage to the tourist industry.
