A methane gas explosion has ripped through a coal mine in north-west Turkey killing 17 people.
The blast caused an underground chamber to collapse trapping some of the 46 or so miners on shift at the time. A rescue operation was immediately launched.
The accident happened at the privately run
Odakoy pit, 20 kilometres outside the town of Dursunbey in Balikesir province.
Several of those injured were taken to hospital with severe burns after the blast.
Turkey’s mining industry has a poor safety record and disasters are all too common. The country’s worst was in 1992 when 270 miners were killed near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak.
