Rescue workers continue to search for the bodies of any remaining victims of the floods and mudslides that tore through Madeira’s capital Funchal.
It was feared some people may have been trapped in flooded underground car parks and cellars.
But as the waters subside there have been no reports of any more casualties.
Forty-two people have been confirmed dead. 18 others are being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the disaster.
As communications have been re-established there has been an increase in the number of islanders reporting missing relatives. Nine people remain unaccounted for. 370 people have been rendered homeless.
