Film maker Roman Polanski has won the Best Director award at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival for his political thriller “The Ghost Writer”.

Polanski, who is under house arrest in Switzerland and fighting extradition to the United States over a conviction for having sex with a minor in 1977, was not present at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Turkîsh film “Honey” was the surprise winner of the coveted Golden Bear award for best picture.

The film tells the story of a young boy who ventures into the woods to find his missing father, who collects honey for a living.
